Another wonderful column. I was in high school at the time, and we went to the fair many times using local coupons for free or reduced cost. The last year, the place was a desert.

Before we moved to Astoria, four households of our family lived in separate apartments in a building which my grandparents owned in Corona, NY. It was not lost on the people of Corona that when the site was a dump, it was "Corona Dumps". When it was converted for the '39 world's fair, it became "Flushing Meadow Park." This was a good barometer of Corona's standing in NYC.

At a very young age, probably around 1954, my grandmother regularly took me out mushrooming at Flushing Meadow Park.
